A poem written for sociology class....yeah, sociology class

So this poem is inspired by the format of "I, too, Sing America by Langston Hughes(1925)

I, Too, Sing America
by Langston Hughes
I, too, sing America.

I am the darker brother.
They send me to eat in the kitchen
When company comes,
But I laugh,
And eat well,
And grow strong.

Tomorrow,
I'll be at the table
When company comes.
Nobody'll dare
Say to me,
"Eat in the kitchen,"
Then.

Besides,
They'll see how beautiful I am
And be ashamed--

I, too, am America.

I like the poem. Speaking of his place in society and how he
sees the world. The assignment was to place your own social
position and opinion into a format similar to the poem.
I'm Canadian so my poem is called "The "Other" Canadian"
I put the word other in brackets because it references the
sociological idea of "The Other" mostly used to separate
different people away from the accepted norm.
"Other"ing groups is often a basis for
discriminatory attitudes & policy. Here's my poem

The “Other” Canadian

By Rajesh Neil Bhargava

I’m the “other” Canadian
I’m born of this land yet
I have a multifaceted origin
They say “Where are you originally from”
Saskatchewan but the west coast is home.

I’m the “other” product of globalization
Parents from two separate nations
Arriving in this land for economic gain
Connected to former ways yet different
Labor moves, lives restructure
Family is constant

I’m the “other” community in Canada
Multiple communities raised this village
The Punjabi market, Bollywood, and spicy food
Relaxed atmosphere, welcoming with food, and island roots
I’m connected to both yet still feel more like an “other”
I’m of this nation and a citizen of the world

The “other” is embodied within me
I’m the one with the crutches or in the wheelchair
You say “what’s wrong with your legs”
Or “were you in an accident”
It’s definitely never been “the Polio”
They give me constant assistance or dramatic indifference
Discrimination is in showing that you care

All of my “other” identities converge hesitantly
My “other” identities are mere details
The “other” of mixed ethnicity
The “other” communities in Canada
The “other” that exists because of global policies
The “other” with the disability
There is only one me.

Social stratification sucks and it creates great inequality
Division is necessary but equality should prevail
I’m not the “other” Canadian
I’m just another Canadian in the crowd

Hope somebody likes it. I'm just sharing. Didn't take much time to
write but I thought about it a lot, reflecting on my view of my life. Enjoy

  1. Welcome to blogger, nice to meet another Canadian.

Yes, we all carry a little of our backgrounds no matter how long we have lived in this beautiful country. My family has been here over 80 years! Most all of Canada is "new". Well, the last 200 years....that's pretty new compared to other lands....

Have fun with blogging...I found you on Babooshka's blog...you just never know where you'll turn up!
