"Passing"

Whoa, for once two posts in one day

I've been writing a paper on the book "Passing" by Nella Larsen. It originates from the Harlem Renaissance movement of the 1920s in the U.S. obviously. The movement was like an emergence of African American writers and stories to mainstream attention.

well, I loved reading this book for similar reasons that I enjoyed "The Jade Peony" by Wayson Choy. It analyzes ethnic identity. In particular this book analyzes biracial identity in terms of people with partial African American heritage "Passing" herself off as White in a time period that's still heavily segregated, and is full of the whole "one drop" racial ideology. Great read. Abrupt, but amazing ending. I love the jealousy that the character Irene holds towards Clare.

Is it wrong that I find it really entertaining that the originally proposed title for this novel by Larsen was "Nig"...I know, terminology just as controversial now as then.
It's interesting to me also that Larsen, in real life, was biracial in exactly the same way as her two main characters in this book.
