This has all been mostly from the last little while
Is it the Sun Philibert by Roch Carrier - Excellent comedic novel. Darkly funny in quite a few places. It's part of a loose trilogy. I've read the previous book in the series, La Guerre Yes Sir, and that one is more straight up hilarious with an offbeat twist that's what really happened in regards to a key death in that book. These books are about small town people in Quebec and how they react in the face of a drastically changing Quebec in the first several decades of the 20th century. Philibert focuses on the title character as he escapes small town life to Montreal but finds that it's actually worse than his previous situation. Cautions: Carrier's writing doesn't sanitize actual or verbal discrimination against any ethnic group. Also, the women are depicted in extremes of older, bitter, matronly types or as being highly sexualized. The male characters are equally stereotypical too. It's satire so I was able to get past all that. It might not be everyone's cup of tea. It's also very specific to Quebec & Canada because of certain mentions of political events. Nonetheless, it is very accessible overall.
