Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince

WHOA! It was an amazing film. While there obviously were some notable deviations from what happened in the book none of the changes negatively impacted the film. It was hilarious seeing the 3 leads bumble there way through young love. Fred and George's joke shop was realized wonderfully. David Yates was much more visually adventurous this time around. I loved how it was tonally completely different from the last film and appropriately so. Tom Felton was absolutely perfect with the greatly expanded role of Draco Malfoy in this installment. He's absolutely the anti-Harry in this but still sympathetic. Dumbledore showing his physical frailties and risky choices in judgment were very appropriate. It really showed what's best about the character. He's a heavily studied mentor but he's also the risk taking adventurer. The conclusion of this movie is absolutely heartbreaking. I would be more explicit but I don't wanna spoil anything for anybody that hasn't read the books. Rupert Grint shows in this that he's a quite gifted comedian. Emma Watson's portrayal of Hermione is finally where she should have been for the last few films. She's emotional but constantly tries to control it. The sarcasm of her humor is pitch perfect. Fenrir Greyback is finally featured in the films and he's freakin intimidating. Helena Bonham Carter's Bellatrix Lestrange is a bit more restrained in this one and it's for the better. Jim Broadbent as Horace Slughorn is definitely a highlight of the film. Slughorn is a bit underplayed in prominence in the film but every minute he's on screen is perfect. Alan Rickman's Snape just gets better every time out.

If I were to sum up my thoughts towards the movie in a few words.
Incredibly efficient film making. All the story is told wonderfully but not at the expense of any action or excitement. The pace is unrelenting with action and pitch perfect emotional moments.
I've said too much. Just drop what you're doing and go watch Half Blood Prince right now.

  1. Wish I could see this. However, when you have two little kids, you pretty much never get to go to the movies. They don't even have the patience for real kiddie movies yet, We took them to see UP, but we had to leave halfway through. I'll need to wait until UP comes out on DVD to see how it ends.
